ONLINE GOSSIP AND INTERNET SLANDER!
With use of Facebook and Twitter inflammatory comments can reach millions in a nano second. Here are some things you need to know when slander affects you on the Internet. 93% of people who have Googled your name will accept the first page results as factual. Negative information on that first page will affect employment decisions. Companies do search online nowadays for information regarding applicants. And, potential customers will most likely research the reputation of your company with the use of Google.
Most businesses have overlooked the idea protecting themselves from online slander. Fact, 99% of the people looking for information will take the time to stop and read negative information about you or your company. And what they read whether it is the truth or a lie will affect their opinion. This is called the “halo effect” in psychology. According to Wikipedia the halo effect is a cognitive bias whereby the perception of one trait, for example a characteristic of a person or object as being influenced by the perception of another trait (or several traits for that matter) of that person or object. An example would be judging a good-looking person as more intelligent. Or judging “a not too good looking” person to be less intelligent. In the same manner, judging an entire company by a little slander or a few negative comments.
Think again if you believe this will have no effect on your sales or your character. Having your website or reference to you website on the first page of a Google search is a key component of any business plan. Having negative references towards you or your company can spell disaster.
